Tulum Travel Guide

Tulum was such a beautiful, relaxing place to go! In this post, I’ll be recapping our trip and answering questions you sent me on Instagram. To get all of the details of my trip, watch my new Tulum Vlog on YouTube!

Some of the main questions I received were: Is it safe? Is there still seaweed? And lots around where to stay and eat!

To kick it off - Yes, it was safe! Having traveled to Mexico multiple times and other international destinations, I felt extremely safe in Tulum. Most people spoke English so it was easy to navigate and get help if you need it. Our hotel staff was so nice and didn’t have any issues.

Secondly, was there seaweed? No! We didn’t have the masses of seaweed that I’ve seen photos of from previous years. There was a little bit, but the hotel staff will regularly rake it in front of hotels, so as long as you’re around a hotel, you should be set. We went in late January and someone else did say that it can get worse later in the season.

Now, let’s get into the details!

How to Get There

It’s easiest to fly into Cancun airport and take the 1.5 - 2 hour drive to Tulum! I recommend pre-ordering a shuttle, we booked a private transfer through Happy Shuttle without any issues. If you’re only visiting Tulum for a few days, I’d say there is no need to get a rental car.

Taxis are abundant around Tulum and are around 200 pesos ($10 USD) per ride around the city. They’re easy to flag down on the street or you can have your hotel order one.

Where to Stay

We stayed at Copal Tulum Hotel for two nights in the town and then moved to El Pez on the beach. We had a wonderful time at both but would recommend staying on the beach! It’s more walkable and just more fun to be lounging in beach chairs!

We didn’t stay in an AirBnB but when we were starting to plan, it looked like there were a lot of options, especially in town!

Where to Eat

We had the best food in Tulum! Not one complaint! Here were some of the most notable restaurants we ate at that are worth a visit:

Gitano

Kitchen Table

Posada Margherita

The Real Coconut in Sanara

Matcha Mama

Here are some other spots we didn’t make it to, but heard great things about:

Casa Jaguar

Zamas + Que Fresco!

Hartwood

Nomade

Raw Love Cafe

Hashtag Poke

Le Zebra

The Nest

Tseen Ja

Casa Banana

Loco Tulum

Sugar Shack at Mateo's

Rosa Negra Tulum

What to Do

We were visiting Tulum to tour wedding venues, so we mainly did that and laid by the beach! I did research some activities prior to going, and these were the highlights! The Ruins of Tulum are supposed to be beautiful, along with the many cenotes around the area. Here are my recommendation:

Beaches

Playa Paraiso

Coco Tulum - Beach Club

Boa Beach Tulum

Tata Tulum

Cenotes

Cenote Suytun

Casa Tortuga Cenotes

Cenote Calavera

Cenote San Lorenzo Oxman

Dos Ojos Cenote

Nicte-Ha Cenote

What to Wear

We had beautiful weather all weekend! It was around 80* and sunny, so we definitely lucked out. Tulum is casual but does have a boutique feel, so dressing nice yet not trying too hard is the way to go. I’ve compiled swimwear and other outfits here for you to easily shop:
